Dharmashastra (religious law)

Dattātmā (दत्तात्मा) refers to one of the twelve types of sons (putra) defined in the Vyavahārādhyāya of the Yājñavalkyasmṛti verse 2.128-132.—If a child gives or presents himself as son to another man being bereft of father and mother or abandoned by them then he is called Dattātmā, or son self-given.
