Source: Wisdom Library: Brihat Samhita by VarahamihiraĀtmamārga (आत्ममार्ग) refers to the “orbits of planetary motion” [?], according to the Bṛhatsaṃhitā (chapter 17) (“On planetary conjunctions—grahayuddha”), an encyclopedic Sanskrit work written by Varāhamihira mainly focusing on the science of ancient Indian astronomy astronomy (Jyotiṣa).—Accordingly, Astronomers are able to predict by calculation beforehand the time and nature of planetary conjunctions. I have treated of this subject in my astronomical work, Pañcasiddhāntikā basing my theories on the Sūrya Siddhānta. The planets all revolve in the sky and their orbits of motion lie one above the other (ātmamārga-saṃsthāna). When seen from this great distance, the planets seem to move on one even surface. [...]”.
Jyotisha (ज्योतिष, jyotiṣa or jyotish) refers to ‘astronomy’ or “Vedic astrology” and represents the fifth of the six Vedangas (additional sciences to be studied along with the Vedas). Jyotisha concerns itself with the study and prediction of the movements of celestial bodies, in order to calculate the auspicious time for rituals and ceremonies.
