Abaddhaka (अबद्धक).—a.

1) At liberty; not bound or restrained.

2) Unmeaning, nonsensical, absurd, contradictory; e. g. यावज्जीवमहं मौनी ब्रह्मचारी च मे पिता । माता तु मम वन्ध्यासीदपुत्रश्च पितामहः (yāvajjīvamahaṃ maunī brahmacārī ca me pitā | mātā tu mama vandhyāsīdaputraśca pitāmahaḥ) || (contradictory); जरद्गवः कम्बल- पादुकाभ्यां द्वारि स्थितो गायति मङ्गलानि (jaradgavaḥ kambala- pādukābhyāṃ dvāri sthito gāyati maṅgalāni) (v. l. mattakāni) । तं ब्राह्मणी पृच्छति पुत्रकामा राजनगर्यां लवणस्य कोऽर्घः (| taṃ brāhmaṇī pṛcchati putrakāmā rājanagaryāṃ lavaṇasya ko'rghaḥ) || Rāyamukuta on Ak.

Ābaddhaka (आबद्धक).—adj. or subst. (Sanskrit ābaddha, with suffix ka, perhaps specifying, § 22.39), (something that is) tied on (as an ornament): Mahāvastu ii.68.5 (prose) tasyāpi rājño śata- sahasramūlyo hāro ābaddhako, tasya ca hārasya…; 72.19 (prose) yo kumārasya hāro ābaddhako mahāraho śata- sahasramūlyo, so hāro…; ii.352.9 = iii.276.11 (verse) ābaddhakā manuṣyāṇāṃ (apparently agreeing with words in prec. line which Senart reads by em. hārā and niṣkāni [sic, °ni]; the mss. are very corrupt).

(-ddhakaḥ-ddhikā-ddhakam) Unmeaning, nonsensical (as speech); comp. the preceding. (Śabdaratnāv.: samudāyārthaśūnye syādviruddhaṃ cāpyabaddhakam.) Bharatsena's Dvirūpak. (E. I. H. 1334) reads the word abandhaka, viz.: abaddhaṃ syādabandhakam. 2. m.

(-kaḥ) The proper name of the chief of a renowned family; his descendants are called abaddhakāḥ or ābaddhakayaḥ; others read the name abandhaka and the descendants abandhakāḥ or ābandhakayaḥ. E. abaddha, taddh. aff. kan.
