5.1. Metaphysics (Introduction)

When I say, I belong to this world, does that mean ‘that’ world also exists?

‘Metaphysics is a branch of philosophy exploring the fundamental nature of reality. Topics of metaphysical investigation include existence, objects and their properties, space and time, cause and effect, and possibility.’[1]

On one’s pursuit of gaining knowledge one often finds oneself filled with wonderment when one sees that the laws of metaphysics, do not only apply on complicated, scientific phenomenon but also they can be observed in each situation of our daily lives. For example, when we talk about space or time, one need not to be a student of physics. Traveling from one place to another through a particular vehicle or by walking is also called space travel as we are crossing innumerable space units to reach that place and utilizing one’s time into doing something useful and satisfactory, can also be described as understanding time.

Similarly, if one has eaten infected food, one’s stomach is going to be upset; this is none other than cause and effect.

‘When we talk about the object of (metaphysical) experience, we allude to it as the reality or as "being", "what is", "what genuinely exists". When we state something is or has presence, we for the most part imply that it is an article for the knowing consciousness and that it has its place in the arrangement of object, which is cognized by an observer.’[2]

If there is nothing to be observed, an observer’s existence appears questionable and if only the object exists but no observer, the object’s reality becomes suspicious.
