I Promise You This

John Binns

I am a bibliophile,
And I collect books,
But I have not
Got
Much money,
That funny
Thing,
Of which the angels sing,
Perhaps,
But I lapse
From my narrative,
Because you see
I have
A lot to give
To the World at large,
And as regards,
“The Golden Barge”,
All which I can say
Is that those were
Halcyon days,
And they
Seemed to be here to stay,
But here I am,
Having moved on,
And I promise you this,
That I will never be gone.

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us...”
Charles Dickens in A Tale of Two Cities
