Despair

Jatindra Mohan Ganguli

Whence thou descend when lights fade,
Despair, my little heart to invade.
Show light, if friend, sweet to me sing,
Why dark and fear thou bring?

I sit and look for dawn bright,
Night must end, sky wake to light;
Now or then that would come,
And I shall rise and walk home.

Give hope, comfort, I’m weak,
Who sends thee to make me sick?
My limbs loose, courage fallen,
Eyes dim, and heart broken.

If He sends who gives me all,
Why I hear not His call?
In Him my faith ne’er shake,
What thou say is but fake.

Nay, not from Him thou hail,
There no dark, no fear entail;
His no message thou convey,
There no place for thee to stay;
To Him I look and ever turn,
Behind thee His tight must burn.
