The Ultimate Truth

Prof. P. P. Sharma

Since ultimate truth
is past finding out
we have room enough
and to spare
to argue and express
our dissent and doubt.
A structure is raised
only to be demolished
but something lives on
out of the ruins
to fashion yet another
hypothesis–
a synthesis
of thesis and anti-thesis.

There is thus always
something to strive for
to give exercise
to our faculties;
even if we don’t arrive
anywhere, the practice
is good; it keeps us in
proper trim
and the ennui
at bay.

If some sage
(arrogant and misguided)
had encapsuled
the ultimate truth
what would have
kept us going
and our mills grinding?

Democritus held out
the iridescent rainbow
in asserting that
truth lay at the bottom
of a very deep well
too deep, let us rejoice,
for anybody to get down to.
