A Question Mark

Har Prasad Sharma

Who am I?
Only to live and die
between joy and sorrow.

Who am I?
A bundle of bones
Or a lump of flesh.
No
All that will reduce
To a handful of ashes
The day my soul
Parts with the body.

Then
Who am I?
An existence of fraud
Or a life
Knotted with lies
Or a riddle
Incomprehensible.

Then
Who am I?
A fragment of God
Or His manifestation
To evidence the Truth
Of His existence.

Then
Who am I?
A morning fresh-dew
On a trembling leaf
Or a footprint
To vanish
Upon the sand of Time.

Then
Who am I?
An interval for nothing
Between birth and death
Or an incarnation
Of falsehood
To attain the Ultimate Truth.

Then who am I?
A soul
All-death-proof.
A prisoner
In destructive form.

Then
Who am I?
A short-lived shadow
Cast by Reality
Or something else
Shrouded
In a cloak of mystery.

Then
Who am I?
A mere puppet
Dancing to the tune of Maya
Or Maya itself
To exist beyond Him.

Then
Who am I ?
No skin and bones
No embodiment of fraud
No fragment of God
No footprint
No interval
No incarnation of falsehood
No shadow of Reality
No mystery
No Maya
No God.

Then
Who am I?
Nothing but a question
A question mark
On my own existence
To puzzle my mind
Like a crossword puzzle.
