Access to Thee

Mrinalini Sarabhai

Access to Thee!

Like a lonely bird searching its mate, from sky to sky, I wander in vain and find nothing but emptiness.

The vast earth glances up towards my lonely flight but reacheth not to take me in her arms.

The Sun-rises of yesterday, the Sun-sets of today intermingle in one great sorrow, and the tears in my heart well up, and fall like raindrops on the earth. And the clouds stretch their white long arms towards me and whisper joyfully ‘Ah, rain’ and the earth changes, and like a shy bride smiles coyly saying ‘Rain, at last’ and suddenly I find a welcome from earth and sky!

Ah! my Lord! Is it only by the tears, wrung out of my heart leaving my soul bare and tortured, that I can gain access to Thee?
