Terminologies and Concepts in Vogue

Though the residential architecture is referred by different label such as traditional architecture, vernacular architecture, folk architecture, primitive architecture, peasant architecture, architecture populaire and so on, they are more or less synonymous that convey similar concept and meaning. Simultaneously, they also signify the similar and comparable materials with a very thin line of difference. However, it is necessary to find out the appropriate terminology for these materials that convey the characteristics of these buildings.

The buildings can be broadly divided into grand or elite type and popular type. The former division usually receives grand or generous patronage, which involves large labour and expense. The copious spending in such a project as well as use of specialized labour and materials make these architectures impressive and imposing. Conversely, majority of the buildings lacks such extravaganza to count as unique or stand out, which are constructed with less or limited resources. This variety of architectures are usually widely prevalent and easily seen everywhere. These architectures, though not in the grand style, possess many cheer values of its own. Hence, these architectures form a major field of inquiry across the globe, which testifies the importance of these buildings.

The growing interest, study, and writings on these buildings have generated many operational definitions or concepts. A survey and discussion on the terminologies current in the field is necessary. Such a discussion of the concepts will be helpful to look into the validity and appropriateness of a terminology to refer these buildings.
