Mimamsa interpretation of Vedic Injunctions (Vidhi)

This page relates ‘Classification of Injunction’ of the study on the Mimamsa theory of interpretation of Vedic Injunctions (vidhi). The Mimamsakas (such as Jaimini, Shabara, etc.) and the Mimamsa philosophy emphasizes on the Karmakanda (the ritualistic aspect of the Veda). Accordingly to Mimamsa, a careful study of the Veda is necessary in order to properly understand dharma (religious and spiritual achievement—the ideal of human life).

Chapter 2.9 - Classification of Injunction

According to nature and purpose injunctions are classified into four classes.

They are:

  1. utpattividhi,
  2. viniyogavidhi,
  3. adhikaravidhi and
  4. prayogavidhi.

But according to the degree of obligatory force injunctions are of three kinds. They are:

  1. apūrvavidhi,
  2. niyamavidhi and
  3. parisaṃkhyāvidhi.

All of these are being discussed in the following chapters.
