1. Religious vow, act of austerity; holy practice, as fasting, continence, etc.; நோன்பு. ஊக்கித்தாங் கொண்ட விரதங்கள் [nonpu. ukkithang konda virathangal] (நாலடியார் [naladiyar], 57).
2. Solemn vow, oath; சங்கற்பம். (பிங்கலகண்டு) தன்னுடன் பிறந்த முன்னவர்விரத முடித்து [sangarpam. (pingalagandu) thannudan pirantha munnavarviratha mudithu] (S. I. I. iv, 94).
3. Penance, one of seven puṇṇiyam, q.v.; புண்ணியம் ஏழனுள் ஒன்றான தவம். (சூடாமணிநிகண்டு) [punniyam ezhanul onrana thavam. (sudamaninigandu)]
