ṭēmbā (टेंबा).—m C Crest, peak, crown, summit (of a hill or tree); top or tip more gen. 2 also ṭēmbhā m A stake, or a stump of a tree used as a stake. Hence fig. Support, patronage. 3 also ṭēmbhā m A rude flambeau or torch made of a stick with rags, dry leaves &c. wrapped around it. Used esp. by banditti or robbers. 4. In the festivity called gōndhaḷa the divaṭī or lamp is called ṭēmbā or ṭēmbhā. Hence ṭēmbā pājaḷaṇēṃ is To light the lamp; and ṭēmbā pājaḷaṇēṃ g. of s. is used reproachfully of an upstart shooting up from obscurity into wealth or fame. āpalā ṭēmbhā miraviṇēṃ or cālaviṇēṃ To impose or assert one's superiority over. ṭēmbhā miraviṇēṃ To make a flash or flaring display; to show off.
