Masniya (मस्निय).—[, v.l. maśniya, as name of an animal: Mahāvastu i.349.20 (balivardehi) vā °yehi vā ajehi vā eḍakehi vā… Senart recognizes the word as corrupt, and suggests (Pali) meṇḍehi; this may well be approximately right, but the precise form may be miṇḍha, q.v., for which Lefm.'s text of Lalitavistara reads miśṛ-, suggesting something resembling the Mahāvastu corruption.]

context information

Sanskrit, also spelled संस्कृतम् (saṃskṛtam), is an ancient language of India commonly seen as the grandmother of the Indo-European language family (even English!). Closely allied with Prakrit and Pali, Sanskrit is more exhaustive in both grammar and terms and has the most extensive collection of literature in the world, greatly surpassing its sister-languages Greek and Latin.
