Kathāvid (कथाविद्) is an epithet ascribed to Brāhmaṇas in the Nīlamatapurāṇa.—In the Gupta inscriptions also we find mention of Kathāvids, and Bāṇa in his Harṣacarita refers to the reading of the Vāyu Purāṇa in his village. This practice may have been popular in Kaśmīra also in circa 6th century A.D. i.e. sometime before the date of the Nīlamata.
