Hard--rice imperfectly boiled. 2 Sounding as cracked--an earthen vessel. 3 unc Large and showy--an ornament. 4 ad Grittily; tasting or sounding as having grit in it--bread &c. 5 In ready cash; down on the nail. 6 Sternly, strictly--enjoining &c. In the two latter senses, as in others which might be given, the word merely expresses emphasis.
