慈嚴 [ci yan]—Ciyan — [Term] Possessing both compassion (慈悲 [ci bei]) and dignity/sternness (威嚴 [wei yan]), thus called Ciyan. This is analogous to the saying "a kind mother and a strict father" (慈母嚴父 [ci mu yan fu]). The Surangama Sutra (楞嚴經 [leng yan jing]), Volume 1, states: "Respectfully obeying Ciyan, I shall seek the profound meaning (密義 [mi yi])."
慈嚴—【術語】有慈悲,有威嚴,謂為慈嚴。所謂慈母嚴父也。楞嚴經一曰:「欽奉慈嚴,將求密義。」
