The eight varieties of trisyllabic feet, viz., nilagesi-k-kaṇam, nīr-k-kaṇam, mati-k-kaṇam or cantira-kaṇam, iyamāṉa-kaṇam or intira-kaṇam, cūriya-kaṇam, tī-k-kaṇam, vāyu-kaṇam or māruta-kaṇam, antara-kaṇam or ākāya-kaṇam, of which the first four are considered auspicious at the beginning of a poem and the rest inauspicious; பிரபந்தத்தை இயற்றத் தொடங்கும்போது செய்யுண்முதற்கண் வருதற்குரிய நிலக்கணம், நீர்க்கணம், மதிக்கணம் அல்லது சந்திர கணம், இயமானகணம் அல்லது இந்திரகணம் என்ற நற்கணம் நான்கும், சூரியகணம், தீக்கணம், வாயுகணம் அல்லது மாருதகணம், அந்தரகணம் அல்லது ஆகாய கணம் என்ற தீக்கணம் நான்குமாகிய எண்கணங்கள்.
