1. Slavery, bondage, servitude; தொண்டுபடுந் தன்மை. ஒன்னார்க் கடிமை புகுத்தி விடும் [thondupadun thanmai. onnark kadimai puguthi vidum] (திருக்குறள் [thirukkural], 608).
2. Slave, formerly attached to land and transferable with it; அடிமை யாள். நீ அடி மையாதல் சாதிப்பன் [adimai yal. ni adi maiyathal sathippan] (பெரியபுராணம் தடுத்தாட். [periyapuranam thaduthad.] 49).
3. Servant, devotee; தொண்டன். அஞ்சலஞ்சலென் றடிமைக்கு . . . நெஞ்சி லுணர்த்தும் [thondan. anchalanchalen radimaikku . . . nenchi lunarthum] (தாயுமானசுவாமிகள் பாடல் பராபர. [thayumanasuvamigal padal parapara.] 124).
