Abhiṣāvakīy (अभिषावकीय्):—denom. parasm.

(-yati) To have a desire for one who presses out the juice of the Soma plant. [This denom. is an example to the Vārtt. na vānupasargatvāt to Pāṇ. Viii. 3. 65; the latter Sūtra enjoins that s of the rad. su (ṣuñ) when preceded by certain prefixes, e. g. by the upasarga abhi, becomes ṣ; e. g. abhiṣuṇoti; thereupon a Vārtt. (nāmadhātostu pratiṣedhaḥ) observes that if a denomin. is formed of a deriv. of su (e. g. sāvakīy of sāvaka) and such a denom. is preceded by a prefix like abhi, the change of s into does not take place; thus sāvakīy when prefixed with abhi, remains, for instance, abhi sāvakīyati; the mentioned Vārtt. na vāº then limits the generality of this restriction by adding that s remains unchanged, only if e. g. abhi is not upasarga to su; for abhi being upasarga to su in the derivat. abhiṣāvaka, s becomes not only in the latter, but also in its denom. abhiṣāvakīy; the case being different from that of abhi sāvakīyati where abhi is not upasarga to su but to sāvakīy; forms like abhisāvakīy or parisāvakīy are therefore not simple denom., but must, like other radicals with upasargas prefixed, be looked for under the simple form, i. e. under sāvakīy. Patanj.: nāmadhātostu pratiṣedho vaktavyaḥ . sāvakamicchati . abhi sāvakīyati . pari sāvakīyati .. (Vārtt.: na vānupasargatvāt) . na vā vaktavyaḥ . kiṃ kāraṇam . anupasargatvāt . yatkriyāyuktāstaṃ prati gatyupasargasaṃjñe bhavataḥ . na cātra sunotiṃ prati kriyāyogaḥ . kiṃ tarhi sāvakīyatiṃ prati; Kaīyy.: na veti . abhiḥ kyajarthasyecchāyā viśeṣaṇatvādupasargo na sunoteḥ . sunotyupasargatve tvabhiṣāvakamicchati . abhiṣāvakīyati . bhavatyeva ṣatvaṃ nāsāvevamiti.] E. abhiṣāvaka, denom. aff. kyac.

context information

Sanskrit, also spelled संस्कृतम् (saṃskṛtam), is an ancient language of India commonly seen as the grandmother of the Indo-European language family (even English!). Closely allied with Prakrit and Pali, Sanskrit is more exhaustive in both grammar and terms and has the most extensive collection of literature in the world, greatly surpassing its sister-languages Greek and Latin.
