तत्र वर्णानां रसानुगुण्य-वैपरीत्यं प्रतिकूलत्वम्। यथा, “प्रचक्रमे विक्रम-विक्रयं भ्रुवा” इत्य्-आदि। अत्र शृङ्गारे प्रतिकूला वर्णाः। एवं वीरादौ माधुर्यादि-व्यञ्जकास् तथा।

tatra varṇānāṃ rasānuguṇya-vaiparītyaṃ pratikūlatvam. yathā, “pracakrame vikrama-vikrayaṃ bhruvā” ity-ādi. atra śṛṅgāre pratikūlā varṇāḥ. evaṃ vīrādau mādhuryādi-vyañjakās tathā.

(1) Among them, pratikūla-varṇa (adverse phonemes, i.e. śruti-kaṭu in a sentence) occurs when the phonemes are not in conformity with the rasa. An example is the verse that begins: pracakrame vikrama-vikrayaṃ bhruvā (7.22). Therein the phonemes are adverse to the rasa, which is śṛṅgāra. In like manner, phonemes suggestive of sweetness, etc., are adverse to vīra-rasa, etc.
