Pratikūlavarṇa (प्रतिकूलवर्ण) refers to “discord of letters” and represents a type of  Padāṃśadoṣa (“defects occurring in parts of words”) which represents one of the various Kāvya-doṣas (‘poetic defects’), as employed in the Bhīṣmacarita (Bhishma Charitra) which is a mahākāvya (‘epic poem’) written by Hari Narayan Dikshit.—In Pratikūlavarṇa certain letters are in consonance with the delineation of certain particular Passions; and letters that are not in such consonance are called ‘discordant’. An example is Bhīṣmacarita X.37.
