Mattavāraṇī (मत्तवारणी), lit. “that which stabilises the intoxicated ones or which has intoxicated elephants”; two side corridors of the stage used for peripheral acting or partial entry/exit.

Mattavāraṇī (मत्तवारणी) is a Sanskrit word referring to side corridors of the stage (raṅgapīṭha) of the playhouse (nāṭyamaṇḍapa). They should be furnished with four pillars and should be equal in length to the stage. According to the Nāṭyaśāstra 2.65-67, “At the time of building them (the two mattavāraṇīs) garlands, incense, sweet scent, cloths of different colour as well as offerings agreable to Bhūtas should be offered to them. And to ensure the good condition of the pillars, one should give to the Brahmins pāyasa and other eatables such as kṛsarā.”
