This page describes the subdivisions of internal austerities (abhyantara-tapa) which is verse 9.21 of the English translation of the Tattvartha Sutra which represents the essentials of Jainism and Jain dharma and deals with the basics on Karma, Cosmology, Ethics, Celestial beings and Liberation. The Tattvarthasutra is authorative among both Digambara and Shvetambara. This is verse 21 of the chapter Stoppage and Shedding of Karmas and includes an extensive commentary.

Verse 9.21 - The subdivisions of internal austerities (ābhyantara-tapa)

Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of Tattvartha sūtra 9.21:

नवचतुर्दशपञ्चद्विभेदा यथाक्रमं प्राग्ध्यानात् ॥ ९.२१ ॥

navacaturdaśapañcadvibhedā yathākramaṃ prāgdhyānāt || 9.21 ||

Prior to meditation (dhyāna), these (internal austerities) are of nine, four, ten, five, and two kinds, respectively. (21)

Hindi Anvayarth:

अन्वयार्थ: [प्राक् ध्यानात्] ध्यान से पहले के पाँच तप के [यथाक्रमं] अनुक्रम से [नवचतुर्दशपञ्चद्विभेदाः] नव, चार, दस, पाँच और दो भेद हैं अर्थात् सम्यक् प्रायश्चित के नव, सम्यक् विनय के चार, सम्यक् वैयावृत्त्य के दस, सम्यक् स्वाध्याय के पाँच और सम्यक् व्युत्सर्ग के दो भेद हैं।

Anvayartha: [prak dhyanat] dhyana se pahale ke pamca tapa ke [yathakramam] anukrama se [navacaturdashapancadvibhedah] nava, cara, dasa, pamca aura do bheda haim arthat samyak prayashcita ke nava, samyak vinaya ke cara, samyak vaiyavrittya ke dasa, samyak svadhyaya ke pamca aura samyak vyutsarga ke do bheda haim |

The subdivisions of internal (ābhyantara) austerities (tapa) are mentioned next.

From the use of the term ‘respectively’ these are taken as follows. Expiation–prāyaścitta–is of nine kinds. Reverence–vinaya–is of four kinds. Service–vaiyāvṛttya–is of ten kinds. Study–svādhyāya–is of five kinds. Renunciation–vyutsarga–is of two kinds. Meditation is excluded here as there is plenty to be said about it. Hence it will be described later.
