Historical Elements in the Matsya Purana

This page relates ‘Dynasty of Brihadratha’ of the study on the historical elements of the Matsya-purana: one of the eighteen Mahapuranas which are Sanskrit texts that have preserved the cultural heritage, philosophy, religion, geography, etc of ancient India. This Matsyapurana was originally written in 20,000 verses and deals with topics such as architecture, ancient history, polity, religion and philosophy.

Following is the descriptions of the kings of Magadha descendants of Bṛhadratha, who were born after or the same time of sahadeva, son of Jarāsandha. When Sahadeva was killed in the Mahābhārata war, his son Somādhi became the king of Girivraja. He ruled for fifty-eight years. In his dynasty Śrutaśravā became the king. He rules for sixty-four years. After him his son Ayutāyu became the king. He ruled for thirty-six years. His son was Niramitra who ruled for forty years. After him king Sukṣatra was born. He ruled for fifty-six years. Then Bṛhatkarma ruled for twenty-three years. After him king Senājit ruled the earth for fifty years and then he died. Then Śrutañjaya became the king. He ruled for forty years. After him Vibhu became the king and ruled for twenty-eight years. Then king Śuci would remain on the kingdom for sixty-four years. After that king Kṣema would consume the earth for twenty-eight years. Subsequently, the mighty Suvrata ruled for sixty-four years. After that Sunetra consumed the earth for twenty-five years. Subsequently Nivṛtti became the king and ruled for fifty-eight years. After that, king Trinetra would enjoy the kingdom for twenty-eight years. Subsequently, Dhumatsena would be the king for forty-eight years. After that, Mahīnetra became the king and ruled for thirty-three years. Then Cañcalā would be the king for thirty-two years. After that, Ripuñjaya remained in the kingdom for fifty years. Thus these thirty-two kings were born in the lineage of Bṛhadratha.[1]
