Historical Elements in the Matsya Purana

This page relates ‘Some King’s dynasty in Kaliyuga: Dynasty of Ikshvaku’ of the study on the historical elements of the Matsya-purana: one of the eighteen Mahapuranas which are Sanskrit texts that have preserved the cultural heritage, philosophy, religion, geography, etc of ancient India. This Matsyapurana was originally written in 20,000 verses and deals with topics such as architecture, ancient history, polity, religion and philosophy.

Some King’s dynasty in Kaliyuga: Dynasty of Ikṣvāku

The son of Sūryavaṃśī king Bṛhadbala’s son Bṛhatkṣaya became the king. Bṛhatkṣaya’s son was Uruksaya and Urukṣaya’s son was Urukṣaya and Urukṣaya’s son was Vatsavyūha. Prativyoma was the son of Vatsavyūha. His son was Divākara. His capital would be a beautiful city called Ayodhya in the middle country. Divākara’s son was Sahadeva and Sahadeva’s son was Mahāmanā Bṛhadaśva. That Bṛhadaśva’s son was Bhānuratha and Bhānuratha’s son was Pratipaśva. Pratipāśva’s son ws Supratīka and Supratīka’s son was Marudeva. Marudeva gaves birth a son named Sunakṣatra. Sunakṣatra had a son named Kinnarāśva who satiated the enemies. His son was Antarikṣa. Antarikṣa had a son named Suṣeṇa and Suṣeṇa’s son was (First) Sumitra. Then Sumitra’s son was Bṛhadrāja and from Bṛhadrāja, Dharmi was born. Dharmi’s son was Krtañjaya and his son was Raṇañjay. Raṇañjaya’s son was Sañjaya and Sañjaya’s son was Śākya. He had a son named Śuddhodana. His son was Siddhārtha and Rahul was the sonof Siddhārtha. From him Prasenjita originated and from Prasenjita Śudraka was born. Śudraka’s son was Kulaka and his son was Suratha. From Suratha, Sumitra (Second) was born. Sumitra (Second) was the last king of this Ikṣvāku dynaty.[1]
