This single pillar has 5 different sculptures of different Avataras of Lord Visnu. First we can see Narasimha Avatara -the Lord as half man and half lion. Second is Vamana Avatara where the Lord comes as the dwarf. Third is the Lord as Sri Rama. Next is figures of Sri Rama (holding bow and arrow) and Balarama (holding the plough). Lastly it is the figures of dancing Krsna and Kalki Avatara.

Kumbakonam is considered as one of the holiest places in Tamil Nadu and is known for its temples and Mathas (monasteries which were centres of Brahmanical learning). These photographs depict the connection between the sculptures in the temples and Natya Shastra and related texts dealing with iconography.
