Sāmānyamūṣā (सामान्यमूषा) is a Sanskrit technical term corresponding to “Cow-nipple Like Crucible”. It is commonly used in Rasaśāstra literature (Medicinal Alchemy) such as the Rasaprakāśasudhākara or the Rasaratna-samuccaya. Sāmānyamūṣā is a tool often used in various Ayurvedic recipes and Alchemical preparations.

Sāmānyamūṣā (सामान्यमूषा) or simply Sāmānya refers to an “ordinary crucible” and is a type of mūṣā (crucible) used for smelting metals.—Sāmānya crucibles were usually made of earth and iron-powder. Apart from these two substances horse-dung, powdered coal, burnt chaff of grains were also added. After mixing the well-ground substances and after adding some moistening agents like milk, a fine paste was made and crucibles of various shapes and sizes were constructed from it. Moulded crucibles made from the above substances was a sāmānyamūṣā which was employed in common operations like melting and extraction of metals from their respective ores, where high temperatures were not needed.

Samanya Musha:—A crucible for general use. Made of charcoal, ash of the paddy husk, fibres of sana (Crotalaria juncea Linn.) and horse-dung are taken together and mixed well by pounding with a hammer. A cone or funnel shaped crucible prepared of this material is called samanta-musha (crucible for general use) if any specific type of crucible is not prescribed, then this general type of crucible is used in pharmaceutical process. It is used for mixing two metals together, then it is called dvandva-melapana-musha. It is prepared according to the size/shape of the nipple of cows called gostani-musha, and is generally used for taking the sattva (essence) of Mica, etc. If it is shaped like Dhatura flower, it is called dhattura-puspa-musha.
