Parivṛddhi (परिवृद्धि) refers to “an increase of”, according to the Bṛhatsaṃhitā (chapter 4), an encyclopedic Sanskrit work written by Varāhamihira mainly focusing on the science of ancient Indian astronomy astronomy (Jyotiṣa).—Accordingly, “The moon after quitting the place (direction) of the sun becomes illumined [i.e., śauklya] by the sun from below and she then also rises after the sun. Thus the lunar disc appears more and more illumined [i.e., śauklya-parivṛddhi] day by day by the sun according to her change of place, just in the same way as the western half of a pot becomes gradually illumined by the sun in the afternoon”.
