The name Host originates from the Latin word "hostis," which originally meant "stranger" or "enemy," but evolved to also mean "guest" or "one who receives another." The etymology traces back to Proto-Indo-European roots related to the concept of reciprocity and exchange. Over time, "host" came to specifically denote someone who welcomes and provides hospitality to guests. Derivable or associated names are Hostilius, Hostilian.
Several historical figures bear the name or a related form. Tullus Hostilius, the third king of Rome (reigned 673–641 BC), was known for his military prowess and expansion of Roman territory. Hostilian (Gaius Valens Hostilianus Messius Quintus), Roman Emperor in 251 AD, co-ruled briefly with Trebonianus Gallus.
