Agni is a Sanskrit word meaning "fire." It is derived from the Proto-Indo-European root *h₂n̥gʷnis, which also gives rise to the Latin word ignis (fire) and the Russian word огонь (ogon', fire). In Hinduism, Agni is the god of fire, a central deity in ancient and modern traditions. He is the messenger between humans and the gods, and is present in many rituals, including the sacred fire ceremony (yajna). Agni is often depicted as a red-skinned man with two or more faces, riding a ram or chariot pulled by fiery horses. Related names or derivatives are Agnidev, Agnimitra, and Agnivesh.
Several notable figures share the name or a variant of it. Agni Shridhar (1955-2020) was a prominent Indian writer, journalist, and filmmaker known for his work on the Bangalore underworld. Agnivesh, also known as Swami Agnivesh (1939-2020), was an Indian social activist, Arya Samaj scholar, and politician known for his work against bonded labor and for interfaith dialogue.
