This page describes the third kind of sorrowful meditation which is verse 9.32 of the English translation of the Tattvartha Sutra which represents the essentials of Jainism and Jain dharma and deals with the basics on Karma, Cosmology, Ethics, Celestial beings and Liberation. The Tattvarthasutra is authorative among both Digambara and Shvetambara. This is verse 32 of the chapter Stoppage and Shedding of Karmas and includes an extensive commentary.

Verse 9.32 - The third kind of sorrowful meditation

Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of Tattvartha sūtra 9.32:

वेदनायाश्च ॥ ९.३२ ॥

vedanāyāśca || 9.32 ||

In case of suffering from pain, thinking again and again for its removal is the third kind of sorrowful (ārta) meditation. (32)

Hindi Anvayarth:

अन्वयार्थ: [वेदनायाः च] रोगजनित पीड़ा होने पर उसे दूर करने के लिये बारम्बार चिन्तवन करना सो वेदनाजन्य आर्तध्यान है।

Anvayartha: [vedanayah ca] rogajanita pida़ा hone para use dura karane ke liye barambara cintavana karana so vedanajanya artadhyana hai |

The third type of sorrowful (ārta) meditation is described next.

The word ‘vedanā’ is used in the meanings of feeling–pleasure and pain. But here it is used in the sense of pain as we are discussing sorrow. When pain is caused by disease, such as gout and rheumatism, thinking again and again for its removal is the third type of sorrowful concentration.
