This page describes the first kind of sorrowful meditation (arta-dhyana) which is verse 9.30 of the English translation of the Tattvartha Sutra which represents the essentials of Jainism and Jain dharma and deals with the basics on Karma, Cosmology, Ethics, Celestial beings and Liberation. The Tattvarthasutra is authorative among both Digambara and Shvetambara. This is verse 30 of the chapter Stoppage and Shedding of Karmas and includes an extensive commentary.

Verse 9.30 - The first kind of sorrowful meditation (ārta-dhyāna)

Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of Tattvartha sūtra 9.30:

आर्तममनोज्ञस्य सम्प्रयोगे तद्विप्रयोगाय स्मृतिसमन्वाहारः ॥ ९.३० ॥

ārtamamanojñasya samprayoge tadviprayogāya smṛtisamanvāhāraḥ || 9.30 ||

On the contact of disagreeable (amanojñya) objects, thinking again and again for their removal, is the first kind of sorrowful (ārta) meditation. (30)

Hindi Anvayarth:

अन्वयार्थ: [अमनोज्ञस्य सम्प्रयोगे] अनिष्ट पदार्थ का संयोग होने पर [तद्विप्रयोगाय] उसके दूर करने के लिये [स्मृतिसमन्वाहारः] बारम्बार विचार करना सो [आर्तम्] 'अनिष्ट संयोगज' नाम का आर्तध्यान है।

Anvayartha: [amanojnasya samprayoge] anishta padartha ka samyoga hone para [tadviprayogaya] usake dura karane ke liye [smritisamanvaharah] barambara vicara karana so [artam] 'anishta samyogaja' nama ka artadhyana hai |

The sorrowful (ārta) meditation is of four kinds. The first kind is described in the next sūtra.

Disagreeable objects include poison, prickly thorns, enemies and weapons. As these cause pain, these are called disagreeable. On their contact, the individual thinks again and again wishing for their removal. This is the first type of sorrowful (ārta) meditation.
