Verse 9.16 - The afflictions caused by the feeling karmas
Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of Tattvartha sūtra 9.16:
वेदनीये शेषाः ॥ ९.१६ ॥
vedanīye śeṣāḥ || 9.16 ||
The remaining afflictions are caused by the feeling (vedanīya) karmas. (16)
Hindi Anvayarth:
अन्वयार्थ: [वेदनीये] वेदनीय कर्म के उदय से [शेषाः] बाकी की ग्यारह परीषह अर्थात् क्षुधा, तृषा, शीत, उष्ण, दंशमशक, चर्या, शय्या, वध, रोग, तृणस्पर्श, और मल-ये परीषह होती हैं।
Anvayartha: [vedaniye] vedaniya karma ke udaya se [sheshah] baki ki gyaraha parishaha arthat kshudha, trisha, shita, ushna, damshamashaka, carya, shayya, vadha, roga, trinasparsha, aura mala-ye parishaha hoti haim |

What karmas are the causes of the remaining afflictions?
Eleven afflictions have already been mentioned. Other than these eleven, the eleven are remaining afflictions. These occur on the rise of feeling (vedanīya) karmas. What are these afflictions? These afflictions are hunger–kṣudhā, thirst–tṛṣā, cold–śīta, heat–uṣṇa, insect-bite–daṃśamaśaka, pain arising from roaming–caryā, uncomfortable couch–śayyā, injury–vadha, disease–roga, pain inflicted by blades of grass–tṛṇasparśa, and dirt–mala.
