Verse 8.16 - The maximum duration of name and status-determining karmas

Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of Tattvartha sūtra 8.16:

विंशतिर्नामगोत्रयोः ॥ ८.१६ ॥

viṃśatirnāmagotrayoḥ || 8.16 ||

Twenty sāgaropama koṭākoṭi is the maximum duration–utkṛṣṭa sthiti–of the name (nāma) and the status-determining (gotra) karmas. (16)

Hindi Anvayarth:

अन्वयार्थ: [नामगोत्रयोः] नाम और गोत्र कर्म की उत्कृष्ट स्थिति [विंशतिः] बीस कोड़ाकोड़ी सागर की है।

Anvayartha: [namagotrayoh] nama aura gotra karma ki utkrishta sthiti [vimshatih] bisa kodakodi sagara ki hai |

Explanation in English from Ācārya Pūjyapāda’s Sarvārthasiddhi:

The maximum duration of the physique-making (nāma) and the status-determining (gotra) karmas is mentioned next.

Again, ‘sāgaropamakoṭikoṭi’ and ‘parā sthitiḥ’–utkṛṣṭa sthiti–have been taken from the previous sūtra. This maximum duration also occurs in case of the wrong-believer (mithyādṛṣṭi) who is endowed with the five senses and the mind–saṃjñī pañcendriya–and who has attained completion–paryāptaka. With regard to the rest it must be understood from the Scripture.
