This page describes subdivisions of the fivefold vow (vrata) which is verse 7.2 of the English translation of the Tattvartha Sutra which represents the essentials of Jainism and Jain dharma and deals with the basics on Karma, Cosmology, Ethics, Celestial beings and Liberation. The Tattvarthasutra is authorative among both Digambara and Shvetambara. This is verse 2 of the chapter The Five Vows and includes an extensive commentary.
Verse 7.2 - Subdivisions of the fivefold vow (vrata)
Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of Tattvartha sūtra 7.2:
देशसर्वतोऽणुमहती ॥ ७.२ ॥
deśasarvato'ṇumahatī || 7.2 ||
The vow is of two kinds, minor-vow (aṇuvrata) and great-vow (mahāvrata), from the abstinence (virati) being partial or complete. (2)
Hindi Anvayarth:
अन्वयार्थ: व्रत के दो भेद हैं-[देशतः अणुः] उपरोक्त हिंसादि पापों का एकदेश त्याग करना सो अणुव्रत और [सर्वतः महती] सर्वदेश त्याग करना सो महाव्रत है।
Anvayartha: vrata ke do bheda haim-[deshatah anuh] uparokta himsadi papom ka ekadesha tyaga karana so anuvrata aura [sarvatah mahati] sarvadesha tyaga karana so mahavrata hai |
Explanation in English from Ācārya Pūjyapāda’s Sarvārthasiddhi:
The subdivisions of the fivefold vow (vrata) are now given.
The word ‘deśa’ refers to partial. The word ‘sarva’ refers to complete. Desisting or abstinence (virati) is supplied from the previous sūtra. These are taken respectively. Partial abstinence is a minor-vow (aṇuvrata), and complete abstinence is a great-vow (mahāvrata). Each vow is of these two kinds. The practise of these vows with vigilance dispels suffering, just as an excellent medicine cures disease.
