This page describes the size and shape of the first lake which is verse 3.15 of the English translation of the Tattvartha Sutra which represents the essentials of Jainism and Jain dharma and deals with the basics on Karma, Cosmology, Ethics, Celestial beings and Liberation. The Tattvarthasutra is authorative among both Digambara and Shvetambara. This is verse 15 of the chapter The Lower World and the Middle World and includes an extensive commentary.

Verse 3.15 - The size and shape of the first lake

Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of Tattvartha sūtra 3.15:

प्रथमो योजनसहस्रायामस्तदर्द्धविष्कम्भो ह्रदः ॥ ३.१५ ॥

prathamo yojanasahasrāyāmastadarddhaviṣkambho hradaḥ || 3.15 ||

The first lake is one thousand yojana in length and half of it in breadth. (15)

Hindi Anvayarth:

अन्वयार्थ: पहिला पद्म सरोवर एक हजार योजन लम्बा और लम्बाई से आधा अर्थात् पाँच सौ योजन चौड़ा है।

Anvayartha: pahila padma sarovara eka hajara yojana lamba aura lambai se adha arthat pamca sau yojana cauda़ा hai |

Explanation in English from Ācārya Pūjyapāda’s Sarvārthasiddhi:

The length, from east to west, of lake Padma is one thousand yojana. Its breadth, from north to south, is five hundred yojana. The bottom of the lake is made of adamant. Its banks are variegated, studded with gold and jewels.
