Verse 3.7 - The transverse world (tiryagloka)

Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of Tattvartha sūtra 3.7:

जम्बूद्वीपलवणोदादयः शुभनामानो द्वीपसमुद्राः ॥ ३.७ ॥

jambūdvīpalavaṇodādayaḥ śubhanāmāno dvīpasamudrāḥ || 3.7 ||

Jambūdvīpa, etc., are the continents and Lavaṇoda, etc., are the oceans, having auspicious names. (7)

Hindi Anvayarth:

अन्वयार्थ: इस मध्यलोक में अच्छे-अच्छे नाम वाले जम्बूद्वीप इत्यादि द्वीप, और लवणसमुद्र इत्यादि समुद्र हैं।

Anvayartha: isa madhyaloka mem acche-acche nama vale jambudvipa ityadi dvipa, aura lavanasamudra ityadi samudra haim |

Explanation in English from Ācārya Pūjyapāda’s Sarvārthasiddhi:

The lower world consisting of the seven earths has been described. Now the transverse world–tiryagloka–is to be described. Why is it called transverse world (tiryagloka)? It is called so as it consists of innumerable concentric island-continents, extending one beyond the other in transverse position up to the ocean of Svayambhūramaṇa. What are these?

Jambūdvīpa and the others are the continents. Lavaṇoda and the others are the oceans. The continents and the oceans bear all the auspicious names current in the world. The first few are as follows:

Names of the continents:

1. Jambūdvīpa,
2. Dhātakikhaṇda,
3. Puṣkaravara,
4. Vāruṇīvara,
5. Kṣīravara,
6. Ghṛtavara,
7. Ikṣuvara,
8. Nandiśvaravara,
9. Aruṇavara.

Names of the oceans:

1. Lavaṇoda,
2. Kāloda,
3. Puṣkaravara,
4. Vāruṇīvara,
5. Kṣīravara,
6. Ghṛtavara,
7. Ikṣuvara,
8. Nandiśvaravara,
9. Aruṇavara.

Thus innumerable continents and oceans must be understood up to the Svayambhūramaṇa ocean.
