Verse 2.45 - The gross body (audārika)

Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of Tattvartha sūtra 2.45:

गर्भसम्मूर्च्छनजमाद्यम् ॥ २.४५ ॥

garbhasammūrcchanajamādyam || 2.45 ||

The first kind of body is attained through the uterine birth–garbhajanma, and spontaneous generation–sammūrcchanajanma. (45)

Hindi Anvayarth:

अन्वयार्थ: [गर्भ] गर्भ [सम्मूर्छनजम्] और सम्मूर्छन जन्म से उत्पन्न होने वाला शरीर [आद्यं] पहिला-औदारिक शरीर कहलाता है।

Anvayartha: [garbha] garbha [sammurchanajam] aura sammurchana janma se utpanna hone vala sharira [adyam] pahila-audarika sharira kahalata hai |

Explanation in English from Ācārya Pūjyapāda’s Sarvārthasiddhi:

According to the order in the sūtra, the gross (audārika) body is the first kind of body. That which is attained through uterine birth–garbhajanma, and through spontaneous generation–sammūrccha-najanma, is the gross body–audārika śarīra.
