Part 6 - Gods are non-restrained
Q. 60. Bhante! Should we say that gods are restrained?
A. 60. Gautama! This is not correct. To say so is incorrect.
Q. 61. Bhante! Should we say that gods are unrestrained?
A. 61. Gautama! This is not correct. To say so is rude.
Q. 62. Bhante! Should we then say that they are restrained-unrestrained?
A. 62. Gautama! This is also not correct. For, this is very unlikely.
Q. 63. Bhante! Then what is to be said about gods?
A. 63. Gautama! One should say, gods are non-restrained15.
Notes (based on commentary of Abhayadeva Sūri):
15. Although the expression non-restrained (ṇo-sañjayā) has a similar meaning as the expression unrestrained (asañjayā), the first expression is not harsh. Hence its use has been recommended. It shows the sense of humour of Mahāvīra.
