Masi Magha (February-March)

Masi Magha normally celebrated in both Siva and Vishnu temples is held in the month of Masi in the asterism Magha generally on the full moon day. As there is a steep fall in the income of the temple, this festival which has to be celebrated in a grand manner is celebrated at present in a very simple manner for a day only.

Sivarathri or the night of Siva is a festival observed in honour of Lord Siva. According to Siva purana, it would appear that Lord Siva confessed to his consort Parvathi that no other ritual than the observance of Sivarathri by his devotees gave him greater pleasure or happiness. On this day, the midnight puja is performed at 12 O' clock in the Adavalleswarar temple. This Masi festival was celebrated even during the time of Jatavarma Vira Pandya. For instance a record[1] of Jatavarma Vira Pandya in his 10thregnal year (A.D. 1260) registers a gift of a village Vizhuvur alias Adavalla Kuthanallur for celebrating the annual festival in the month of Masi.
