Festivals (Introduction)

In addition to this pujas many festivals performed in the Adavalleswarar temple. These festivals provide to fulfil religious obligations. The festivals are celebrated to commemorate seasons and religious, social and cultural changes of the land.[1] Festivals have played a very important part in bringing cohesiveness among individuals and communities. The temple garden supplies the flowers for this festival. For instance a record[2] of Rajaraja III issued in his 13thregnal year (A.D.1230) mentions several tax incomes for the maintenance of Nandavanam, incense and fresh cloths on the ritualistic Pujas of the main deity. The taxes were Padikkaval, Mapathakku, Kankani, Thari Iray, Thatchar, Kollar Mahazhhmai, Kusavar, Ur Vaniyapper Vari, Kadai Pattam and Chekku Kadamai.[3]
