Sri Thanthonreeswarar Temple

This temple at Perumbairkandigai village occupying an area of 15 cents was built by Chola kings about 1,000 years ago. As the Lingam made its appearance by itself, it was originally known as “Thanae Thonri” (Self origin) which later on became Thanthoiiree.[1] The gopura is 60 feet high. It has no jewels or vahanas. It has three acres of wet lands which are under the personal cultivation of the Gurukkal who performs poojäs twice a day. His office is not hereditary. The annual festival is celebrated on Chithra Pournami day. The Lord and Devi are adorned as bridegroom and bride, and give dharsan to Sage Agasthyar. A single trustee is managing the affairs of the temple.[2]
