Antiquity of Madurantakam

The region in and around Madurantakam must have been a smelt of mans activity right from the Pre historic period, the traces of which have been found at Chinglepet taluk in Chinglepet District. Attirambakkam village of this district yield a good number of Palaeolithic implements of different variety(2). The excavation conducted by N,R. Benergiee and K.V. Soundara Rajan in 1950 and 1952 at Sanur brought to light many Megalithic burials. Apart from this the Exploration conducted in 1990 by the Department of Ancient History and Archaeology students of Madras University in the same place found many bigger and smaller cairn circles. The villages like Acharapakkam and Permbair of this district revealed an interesting type of Megaliths. A Megalithic burial with stone slab at the centre surrounded by a cairn circle is found at Perumbair [Plate.1]. Thus these evidences prove beyond doubt that there was human habitation during the prehistoric and proto historic period in and around the place of Madurantakam.[1]
