Scultures of Padmapani

Fourteen metal icons of Avalokitesvara depict his form of Padmapani. He is a non-tantic form of Avalokitesvara. He is supposed to create all animate things by the command of dyani Buddha Amitabha (Getty: 1928; 61). Of these fourteen icons six specimens are represented in the ivajra-paryankasana, five and three being in padmasana and vama-lalitasana mudra respectively.

[Registration No. 764; Size 15.5 x 8.5 cm]

First bronze image of Padmapani is seated straight in padmasana mudra on a highly stylized visvapadmapitha. While his right palm shows varada-mudra resting on right knee, the slightly raised left hand holds the stalk of a full-blown lotus flower, root-scroll in left at the bottom of prabhamandala and stalk follows his hand from elbow to palm and again to the elbow. Full blown lotus flower held by deity is adjusted on left rim at the face level of the god.
