Part 1.16 - Description of Bhur Utuwa Sabah

The Bhur Utuwa Sabah is generally celebrated in the month of Jeth. They believe that performing this puja will help them to get rid of misfortune. They perform this Sabah near a river and a dhip is made. Several items like maah-prasad, pitha, mythoi, banana, tamul-paan, xolita are offered in different shares in the name of Gatigiri, Jolkhai, Mahadeo-Parvati, Luit Konwar, Sari Xal Gossani, Jalar Na Bhani, 18 Kuwari, 18 Luit, Jal Kuwari, Ghatoi, Dangkota etc. A bhur is prepared from banana sheath and a soi is made upon it and inside it maah-prasad, banana, tamul-paan and xolita is placed and drifted away in the river in the name of Bordoisila, Horudoisila, Bhuruli, Habuki, Aag ting, Guri ting, Duwari and Jakh-Jakhini. After drifting away the bhur, the share of Jolkuwari is immersed in the river. Naam-Kirtan is performed on this occasion. After that maah-prasad is distributed among the people present and the ceremony ends with a feast. The maah-prasad is not brought back to the house considering it may bring back misfortune.[1]
