Part 1.12 - Description of Batbheta Puja

The Sonowal Kacharis celebrate Batbheta Puja for the wellbeing of the villages. Those who celebrate this puja remain in fasting on that particular day. They prepare a poroli out of bamboos and these are tied in four bamboo pieces and kept under the ground in the four corners of the village. Four red hens are buried in the four corners along with the bamboo. Then they have the custom of going to the Gajai Manai Khetro and make a dhip in the ground. They spread some pithaguri over the dhip and light a saki and offer a huriya tamul in a banana leaf. Then they have the custom of sacrificing a pair of hen and offer the parts of the hen along with rice beer to the God. Then they offer their prayers to Gajai Manai. The customs of this puja also vary from village to village.[1]
