Head-dress of Women (c): Tiara

Apart from the makuta, women are also seen with a delicate diadem. A fine example of a simple tiara can be seen adorning the head of Jaya, the attendant of Durga in the Mahishasuramardini panel in the cave temple at Mamallapuram (fig. 159). The tiara is shown in the form of a flat band having a floral medallion attached to its top by means of a stalk like appendage. In the same cave temple, the Seshasayi Vishnu panel gives another fine example of an elaborate tiara adorning the head of Bhudevi (fig. 160). The tiara on her head is in the form of a band having probably three floral medallions–one in the middle and the other two at the extreme ends. Resting over the central medallion can be seen a pear shaped appendage having beaded border with a circular design in the centre. It seems that She also wears similar ornament at the back of Her head.
