Head-dress of Women (b): Cylindrica cap like Makuta

The Govardhanadhari panel at Mamallapuram also gives beautiful depiction of this type. The female companion or the gopika (fig. 157) standing in profile by the side of Nappinai wears a head-dress, in the shape of a short cylindrical cap with a circular ornament on its side. Similar type of head-dress can also be seen worn by a celestial in the Gajalakshmi panel, carved in the Varaha-mandapa at Mamallapuram. From this depiction it is known that such circular ornament exists on both the sides of the head-dress. The fact that these circular ornamentations on the head-dress have in fact floral design in it is known from another similar type of head-dress worn by two celestials–one depicted on the Arjuna-ratha and the other on the Larger Bhagiratha penance panel at Mamallapuram (fig. 158).
