Jainism represents a way of life incorporating non-violence and approaches religion from humanitarian viewpoint. Ancient Bengal comprises modern West Bengal and the Republic of Bangladesh, Eastern India. Here, Jainism was allowed to flourish from the pre-Christian times up until the 10th century CE, along with Buddhism.

Archaeological sites in Surohar (Uttar Dinajpur District)

165. Surohar:

The present village is a well-known archaeological site situated under the jurisdiction of Itahar of Uttar Dinajpur. Overall the Itahar block is very important and there are number of archaeological sites which have yelded good quantity of sculptural remains both Brahmanical as well as Jaina. Among these sites, the present site is very close to Itahar and an excellent image of Rṣabhanātha was discovered from this villagẹ. This image is presently kept in the Rajshahi Museum, Bangladesh. During our recent exploration, we also documented a Jain caumukha presently kept in the Itahar Police Station compound along with other sculptural remains. According to the local authority, this caumukha was recovered from near by area of Itahar.
